Dr. Jay A. Tischfield received his B.S. from Brooklyn College
(1967), M.Phil. (1969) and Ph.D. (1972) from Yale University,
and did postdoctoral work in human genetics at the University of
California, San Francisco. He is American Board of Medical
Genetics certified in two clinical subspecialties, a Founding
Fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics, and has
served on the faculties of Case Western Reserve University, the
Medical College of Georgia, the University of Cincinnati College
of Medicine, and Indiana University School of Medicine. He is
currently MacMillan Professor and Chair of the Department of
Genetics at Rutgers University, Professor of Psychiatry and
Pediatrics at Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine, and
Director of the Human Genetics Institute of New Jersey. His
research includes cellular mechanisms for loss of gene activity
in embryonic stem cells and cancers, the pathobiology of kidney
stone disease, and the molecular genetics of mental disorders,
alcoholism, and opiate addiction. He is the Principal
Investigator of active US National Institutes of Health awards
in excess of $55 million (approximately $36 million direct and
$19 million indirect costs), most of which is to provide infra
structural support for sharing cell lines, DNA, clinical and
genotype data for studies on the genetics of “complex” diseases
such as autism, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. To this
end, he is Co-Director of the NIMH Center for Collaborative
Genetic Studies on Mental Disorders and the NIDA Center for
Genetic Studies, and Director the NIDDK Genetics Repository and
the NIAAA/COGA Repository. He is also the current or past
recipient of individual research grants from the National
Institute of Environmental Health Sciences; the National
Institute of General Medical Sciences; the National Institute of
Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases; the National Institute
on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism; the National Science
Foundation; the National Aeronautics and Space Administration;
the Health Resources and Services Administration; as well
private and state agencies.
